Aquascaping A Betta Fish Tank
After you have installed all the hardware, it’s time to start giving the left side of your brain a pause and get originative with scaping and planting your aquarium. Aquascaping is based on personal taste and subjective aesthetics so there is no wrong way to aquascape your aquarium. However, because you are designing your tank to house a sorority of feisty little female betta fish, remember to use a concept that includes lots of hiding places and breaks up long lines of sight. Pieces of Malaysian driftwood, which can be found at most aquarium shops, are great for creating optical points of concern, concealment places and discerning platforms to tie plants on to. Same with rocks, while they can be a little trickier to attach plants to.
Once you’ve purchased your driftwood you want to look meticulously for any jagged or sharp edges that could scrape up your bettas or rip their fins. Use fine-grit sandpaper if anything needs to be smoothed out. Run the rocks and driftwood under the faucet and scour them with a clean brush to remove any dirt, sand, or grit that may exist. Next, boil them in a large pot of water for about 20 minutes to kill anything that might have hitched a ride. In the case of driftwood, you’re going to boil it, drain the discolored water and boil it again to help leach out the natural tannins found in the wood. After boiling, let it soak in de-chlorinated water for a while.
After all of your natural decorations have been prepped and dried, place various pieces of your driftwood and rock collection into the aquarium and in atypical combinations or orientations. Once you find the combination that you like the best, make a quick sketch or get out your digital camera and photograph a few pictures from different angles for reference. Reference pictures help guarantee that you won’t waste time tying plants onto a surface that will later be buried or jammed against an abutting rock or piece of driftwood. They will also assist in making it quicker and less traumatic when it comes time to put everything back in place, since you won’t need to waste time trying to remember how you had it before, and can drop your pre-planted driftwood and rocks in like Lego pieces.
Once you’ve taken adequate mental notes and pictures, remove the driftwood and rocks. If you want to attach plants onto these pieces of decoration, then now is the time to do it. Once you have all of your driftwood and rocks prepped with plants, then add in the substrate to the tank. For a planted aquarium it is very significant that you use specialized substrate instead of regular aquarium gravel. The Eco-Complete is sustainable, since the live bacteria in it convert fish waste and other tank debris into usable plant food, and thereby negates the requirement to vacuum the bottom of your tank and disturb the plants’ roots. Besides having beneficial bacteria, Eco-Complete is rich nutrients and contains a lot of minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium that aquarium plants require to get established and flourish. In additiona it looks natural and creats a pleasing contrast against the greenery along with being simple to work with as it has the consistency of wet sand. Notwithstanding, once you add water to it, it is a little harder to control, which can make replanting difficult. While it can be a bit on the spendy side, each 20-lb bag is well worth it. Add in the substrate until you have a layer about 2.5 to 3 inches deep across the entire bottom of the tank. If anything, slope it down as you get towards the front of the tank. With your foundation laid, now its time to place the driftwood and rocks and break out your plants!
